“Said” is one of the most commonly used dead words in writing. When writing dialogue or when adding a lead-in for contextual evidence, it is important to show readers exactly how something is communicated. A writer should consider the following: What do I want my reader to picture? What emotions are behind the dialogue?  This page helps students think about more descriptive replacements for this dead word.
